香港是由香港島、九龍半島、新界及離島組成，總面積一千多平方公里，已發展土地少於25%，寸金尺土的情況十分嚴重。
以香港島為例，很多寺院、禪院、佛堂、精舍、居士林、佛學會及講堂等只能以小規模建設出現於各區的商住樓宇中，佔地由一個獨立單位、一層至三層不等，因面積所限，所以在設計、擺設上有別於傳統四合院宏偉的佛教道場。其地理分佈則從港島西面的堅尼地城延至灣仔、銅鑼灣、跑馬地、北角，最東面至筲箕灣，而港島南區的赤柱也有一座觀音寺。
一些規模較大且具影響力的佛教團體和機構，例如香港佛教聯合會、香港正覺蓮社、香港菩提學會，台灣中台禪寺香港分會：普廣精舍，以及近年新創立的法性講堂、香港佛法中心等，亦同樣設於商住大廈裏。由此可見，香港島的佛教道場分佈跟商業密集性的地域環境息息相關。
要參訪港島的佛教道場，在交通方面，除了港鐵和巴士外，乘坐已有110年歷史的「叮叮」電車可能是一個更好的選擇，不僅可以沿途感受香港的人情風味，更可以直達目的地，既方便又省錢。
